John McCain

10"x 11" Oil on canvas.

Flush with victory from the New Hampshire primary, it looked as though John McCain was in for the long haul, and would be a contender for the 2000 Republican Presidential nomination. His giddy enthusiasm proved too much to resist, so I chose him as a test subject for my first oil painting.
The project came about after a witness to my other (Photoshop) work sneered that it wasn't "original".

"I'll show him" I fumed, and started an oil canvas. Six months on, and I am still very happy with the results. I used a blue ground, which is very effective for the skin tones.(The face is painted first with highlights and shadows on a blue/grey surface). Successive skin tone layers are then added, over a series of days, allowing 2 days for each application to dry.
