Spencer Tracey
1900-1967
Born Spencer Bonaventure Tracy in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he made a total of 73 movies, and was nominated for an Academy Award nine times. He became the first actor to receive consecutive Best Actor Oscars, for Captains Courageous (1937), and Boys Town (1938).
In 1942 he was cast opposite Katherine Hepburn, in Woman of the Year. It was the first of 9 films they would make together, and the start of a discreet offscreen affair that lasted 25 years.
He was a man of enormous talent and versatility, able to make any character completely credible, whether in comedy, horror or drama. Unlike most of his peers, and as Cagney observed,he was famously difficult to impersonate, lacking any one particular trait. It was a tribute to his ability to completely immerse himself in any particular role.
